Tax-News.com: CRA Offers Online Help To Canada's SMEs

06 September 2012

Canada's Revenue Minister has been promoting a number of initiatives designed to reduce the burden placed on small businesses, in particular the help offered online to keep businesses informed on tax matters.

Revenue Minister Gail Shea said: ?Our government recognizes how important small businesses are to the Canadian economy. We look forward to continuing discussions with business owners about how the CRA?s online initiatives can help them build their business. The [Canada Revenue Agency] CRA will continue offering improved services online so that our country?s entrepreneurs have access to information when and where they need it.?

According to Shea, making information clear and accessible online is a key step towards empowering and supporting small businesses by cutting government red tape. Shea has been promoting a number of new features that have been added to the CRA website, designed to keep businesses informed on tax matters.

For instance, the CRA has developed a number of videos to deliver information to businesses. These videos cover topics such as payroll, employer provided gifts and awards and parking, record-keeping, reporting business income and expenses, how to start a new business, and changes to the Canada Pension Plan. A "one-stop shop" webpage has also been created, where businesses can find information and service options that may apply to their situation.

Shea also promoted the launch of a "My Business Account Enquiries Service". This allows a business, or its representative, to ask the CRA tax-related questions specific to its account. The business will then receive its answer online, in writing, in the Message Centre.

Finally, Shea pointed to the 2011 introduction of a Group ID feature in the "Represent a Client" programme. This lets businesses maintain employee access to business information through the online service. According to Shea, this means that a key irritant is removed, as business owners now only need to fill out the RC59 Business Consent Form.
