(AP) ? Jim Calhoun has spent more than half his life as a head basketball coach, never venturing far from the New England area where he was born.

Between coaching stints at Northeastern and Connecticut, he racked up 873 wins ? 625 of them coming at his beloved UConn, where he ran the men's program for 26 years and won three national titles.

Recently, though, the 70-year-old Hall of Famer has struggled with health problems, including a fractured hip last month that put him on crutches. On Thursday, he planned to announce his retirement, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because Calhoun's move had not yet been made public. WVIT-TV in Hartford first reported the expected announcement.

Assistant coach Kevin Ollie was expected to replace Calhoun, the person who spoke to the AP said. The school scheduled a 2 p.m. news conference "to address the future of the men's basketball program."

Ollie will take over a Huskies team that is ineligible for the 2013 NCAA tournament because of its failure to meet national academic standards, one of several off-court problems that hit UConn late in Calhoun's tenure.

The Huskies will open this year with just five players who saw significant playing time last season.

Before fracturing his hip, Calhoun fought off cancer three times and missed eight games last season while suffering from a painful spinal condition. He returned just four days after having back surgery to coach the Huskies in their regular-season finale and the postseason.

UConn finished the year 20-14, losing to Iowa State in the first-round of the NCAA tournament.

In addition to his medical leave, Calhoun served a three-game suspension at the start of the Big East season last winter for failing to maintain an atmosphere of compliance in his program with NCAA rules, an issued that dated back to recruiting violations in 2008.

A native of Braintree, Mass., Calhoun played college basketball at American International in Springfield, where he was a team captain and leading scorer his junior and senior years.

After graduating in 1968, he began his head coaching career at Old Lyme High school, before moving back to Massachusetts where he coached at Westport High School and then Dedham High School.

He led Dedham to a 21-1 record in 1972, and was hired as head coach at Northeastern.

Calhoun spent the next 14 years at the school, leading the team from Division II program, to a mid-major power with five appearances in the NCAA tournament.

Calhoun was then hired by UConn in May 1986 and won an NIT title in his second season. His teams won 10 Big East regular-season championships and seven Big East Tournament titles over his tenure.

In 1999, he coached the Huskies to a 34-2 record and their first NCAA championship, a 77-74 upset over Duke.

In 2004, the Huskies started and ended the season at No. 1, beating Georgia Tech in the NCAA championship game 82-73. The Huskies, led by Emeka Okafor and Ben Gordon, won their six tournament games by an average of over 17 points.

In 2011, UConn finished the regular season in ninth place in the Big East before reeling off a remarkable 11-consecutive wins during the postseason, including a 53-41 victory over Butler in the national championship game.

Calhoun's only loss in the Final Four came in 2009 to Michigan State in the national semifinals. The coach missed the Huskies' first NCAA tournament game that season after being hospitalized for dehydration.

It was one of several health issues that marked his time at UConn, where he missed 29 games, and left another 11 because of illness. He successfully battled prostate cancer in 2003 and skin cancer twice, most recently in 2008.

Calhoun took his latest medical leave on Feb. 3 and missed eight games because of the effects of spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spine normally associated with aging and sometimes with arthritis. It began affecting him in the summer of 2011, but reached the point where he could no longer coach after the team lost at Georgetown on Feb. 1.

He underwent a two-hour surgery on Feb. 27 in New York that involved removing a large disk fragment that had been pressing on a spinal nerve, the school said. The surgeons decompressed the area around the nerve.

He returned in time to coach UConn to a regular-season ending win in Pittsburgh and two victories in the conference tournament, before the Huskies lost in the Big East quarterfinals to Syracuse, and in the first-round of the NCAA tournament to Iowa State.

Last month, Calhoun had surgery to repair a left hip fracture from a bicycle accident. He was cycling near his summer home in Madison when he hit sand and fell, hours before he was to coach former players in a charity game.

Calhoun also was hospitalized in 2009 after breaking several ribs during a charity bike ride and he missed seven games in the 2009-210 season for an undisclosed stress-related medical reason.

In May 2010, the program was cited by the NCAA for eight major rules violations. The allegations came at the end of a 15-month investigation into the recruiting of former player Nate Miles, who was expelled from UConn in October 2008 without ever playing a game for the Huskies.

Besides accusations that his staff improperly contacted recruits, gave them improper benefits and distributed free tickets to high school coaches and others, Calhoun was cited for failing to maintain an atmosphere of compliance.

The accusations led to the resignations of two assistants, and a promise from Calhoun to make things right. He told reporters that the idea of bringing closure to that issue was a "major, major factor" in his decision to come back after the 2011 championship season.

Calhoun also faced criticism for his team's performance in the classroom. His team failed to qualify academically for the 2013 NCAA tournament under rules passed in the fall of 2011.

UConn sought a waiver citing improved scores in 2011-12, but that was rejected and five underclassmen left the Huskies after last season.

Sophomore guard Jeremy Lamb and freshman center Andre Drummond departed for the NBA, a move both were expected to make even if UConn had been eligible for the tournament.

Alex Oriakhi transferred to Missouri for his senior season, citing the NCAA decision. Sophomore forward Roscoe Smith transferred to UNLV and redshirt freshman center Michael Bradley left for Western Kentucky.

Ollie, Calhoun's expected successor, played at UConn and spent 13 seasons in the NBA, before being hired as an assistant in 2010. He has long been mentioned as a logical successor, and has said he would want the job.

Calhoun is well known for his support of many charities, and has raised millions to help build the Pat and Jim Calhoun Cardiology Center at UConn Health Center.

He also is the state's highest paid employee, signing five-year, $13 million contract in 2010.

Facebook CEO dangles search and mobile, shares rally

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Facebook Inc CEO Mark Zuckerberg soothed investors in his first major public appearance since the No. 1 social network's rocky May IPO, breathing life into its struggling shares after hinting at new growth areas from mobile to search.

The 28-year-old co-founder looked confident in a gray T-shirt and jeans, asking Wall Street to be patient as the company developed new products, addressing issues such as employee morale, and dashing rumors Facebook may build a smartphone.

Facebook became the first U.S. company to debut on stock markets with a value of more than $100 billion. But it has since lost more than half of its capitalization as investors fret about slowing growth and the company's challenges making money as users shift from PCs to mobile devices.

Zuckerberg, who has himself lost billions of dollars on paper since Facebook's market debut, admitted to disappointment about his company's crumbling share price, but argued Wall Street has yet to grasp the full potential of its fledgling mobile business.

His comments helped drive Facebook shares up more than 3 percent after hours to above $20, building on a 3.3 percent gain in regular trade on Tuesday. The stock is still well off its $38 debut price.

"It was positive just to see him out there speaking," said Raymond James analyst Aaron Kessler. "He was hinting that the stock was undervalued, and we'll see about that. But he's looking at this business as a multiyear investment, even if investors are looking for results much sooner."

Speaking at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference in San Francisco on Tuesday, Zuckerberg highlighted Facebook's progress in mobile over the past six months and the company's room for growth.

Facebook's recently released mobile ads are already delivering better results for advertisers than the traditional "display" ads that appear on the right-hand side of the social networking service on PCs, Zuckerberg said.

"One of the main things that I think is misunderstood right now is how fundamentally good" the company's mobile prospects are, he said.

    ADVERTISING, SEARCH

While declining to offer details, Zuckerberg hinted that the company was halfway through a cycle to "retool" and offer new advertising products. He also said he believed search could be a ripe area of growth for Facebook and was working to offer a competitive search product -- comments that likely interested executives at Google Inc, one of Facebook's fiercest competitors.

Facebook has a team working on the social network's existing search feature, which already garners roughly 1 billion queries every day, Zuckerberg noted. But at some point he said Facebook would focus its efforts more intently on developing a full-featured search service, which he described as a "big opportunity."

Zuckerberg, who wrote in the IPO prospectus that the company has always cared primarily about its "social mission," has kept a low public profile as the stock has crumbled in the months since the IPO.

Adding to the pressure on the stock is the ongoing expiration of "lock-up" selling restrictions for shares held by employees, insiders and early investors: More than 1 billion additional Facebook shares are set to become available for trading by year's end.

Zuckerberg, who recently committed not to sell his own shares for at least 12 months, conceded that the company's downward-spiraling stock was not helping staff morale, but stressed he still thought it was a good time to join the company and "double down."

"It's not like this is the first up and down that we've ever had," he told hundreds of attendees at the conference. "I would rather be in the cycle where people underestimate us."

    SMARTPHONES

While Facebook has taken a beating on Wall Street, some of the Internet industry programmers, entrepreneurs and investors who packed the aisles to watch Zuckerberg's roughly 30-minute talk said their faith in the CEO and the company was not shaken.

"This company is about vision and changing the world and I don't know who would be better prepared to lead it than the guy who had that vision and built the company to a profitable multibillion dollar company before his 30th birthday," said Dave Crowder of GSV Asset Management, which owns Facebook shares.

Zuckerberg acknowledged that he had erred years ago by using a programming language that slowed the development of Facebook apps for Apple and Android phones.

"Probably we will look back and say that that was the biggest mistake, the biggest strategic mistake we made," he said of the company's decision to create mobile apps using open web standards instead of building apps specially designed for iPhone and Android smartphones.

But he again quashed a years-long rumor that Facebook is wading into the hardware business and developing a branded phone.

Building a smartphone would be "clearly the wrong strategy for us," Zuckerberg said.

Gunmen kill 10 Iraqi soldiers in raid on army camp

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Officials say gunmen have killed at least 10 Iraqi soldiers in an early morning raid on a small military outpost in central Iraq.

Police say the assailants stormed the army base in the town of Dujail, some 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Baghdad, before dawn Sunday and took the sleeping soldiers by surprise.

Police say eight soldiers were wounded in the raid, and the gunmen escaped without being captured.

Hospital officials in the nearby town of Balad confirmed the casualties.

All officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to release the information.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

SULAIMANIYAH, Iraq (AP) ? A car bomb struck a group of police recruits waiting to apply for jobs in a northern Iraqi city on Sunday, killing seven and wounding 17, a senior police commander said.

The recruits had gathered in a parking lot outside a military base about 10 kilometers (six miles) outside the city of Kirkuk, where they were told to assemble to apply for police jobs with the state-run Northern Oil Co., said the city police commander Brig. Gen. Sarhad Qadir.

Qadir said all of the recruits were Sunni Muslims. He blamed the morning attack on al-Qaida but did not provide more specifics.

Kirkuk, about 290 kilometers (180 miles) north of Baghdad, has been an Iraq flashpoint for years. Iraqi Sunni Arabs, Kurds and Turkomen all claim rights to the city and the oil-rich land that surrounds it.

Kurdish leaders long have sought to draw Kirkuk into their self-rule region of Iraq's three northernmost provinces, and have pushed for a census to determine the city's ethnic majority. But the majority Arab central government in Baghdad has delayed the census, which could incite widespread ethnic violence over Kirkuk's future.

Qadir said car bombs also struck two Sunni towns outside Kirkuk ? Hawija and Ar Riyad ? wounding seven people.

Sunday's attacks come on the heels of a spate of bombings of three Shiite mosques in Kirkuk on Friday. Eight people were killed and 70 wounded in those attacks, which appeared timed to explode as worshippers were leaving the mosques after Friday prayers.

faithtuppers - Managed Computing Business - IT Outsourcing ...

computer networking IT Outsourcing UxbridgeIT outsourcing is becoming more and more preferred presently including in the area IT Outsourcing Uxbridge, which happens as no surprise as outsourcing has proved by itself an incredible cash saving strategy. Naturally, choosing the right company is essential to productive outsourcing. There are many outsourcing companies supplying their companies. Some are fantastic, some are usually not fairly, but how do you discover a ?perfect? outsourcer? Nicely, there is certainly in all probability no these kinds of point as ?perfect? during this planet, but below are numerous advices that should enable you to pick out the correct outsourcer.

Appear for any threat free offer

If you make a decision to outsource a specific IT task, be it a fundamental site enhancement or creation of challenging tailored software program, you would like to make your expense safe and sound. Tend not to employ the primary firm that gives its products and services, or perhaps the one which may be the least expensive. Appear for your corporation that is willing to indication an arrangement and just take a full economic obligation for your item they develop. What I indicate just isn?t merely a refund in the event that they fail to produce the bit of program you buy, but additionally a compensation of losses which could originate from malfunction or failure with the program. Chances are that a company will deliver this sort of a guarantee only in the event that it can be assured regarding the high quality it gives you, and that is accurately the type of business you would like.

    Appear for industry experts
You do not need to rely on IT initiatives which are vital to your corporation into a bunch of amateurs proclaiming their selves IT industry experts. Actually, recognizing knowledgeable IT outsourcing corporation from the previously mentioned brought up dabblers is not easy. The very fact is all outsourcing corporations, irregardless of how excellent they can be, will claim on their own professionals, and it is actually your position to find the one which seriously is qualified. You may evaluate each individual business depending on the portfolio it?s or based upon the references it?s from its clients. Don?t hesitate to go to web pages that were or presently are buyers of your outsourcer and pay out extra awareness towards the internet site in the outsourcing organization alone. Are individuals sites well-designed? Does anything get the job done properly and every single url gets you into the page it truly is meant to? Do they appear creative? Is that this the type of top quality you count on from your outsourcer? Answering all these queries is likely to make your collection process a lot easier.

    Preserve you info secure
When operating with outsourcing corporations, you might should offer details that has commercial value to the firm, and, obviously more than enough, you may not want your competitors and basic manifeste to have a hold of that info. In these circumstance, be certain you indication an NDA (nondisclosure arrangement) along with the outsourcing corporation, and ensure that workers who will work on your job have signed the exact same.

Usually, most organizations that decided to outsource a number of their company features are happy using the effects they acquired, and I imagine a few individuals that claim outsourcing inefficient would be the kinds who did not pick the proper outsourcing firm. There are numerous IT Outsourcing Uxbridge?outsourcers offering their solutions and you have to choose some added care and time for you to choose the one which can make your outsourcing experience effective.

What Should Your Executable Strategic Plan Cost in Terms of ...

Sustainable business success originates from an executable strategic plan. However, creating a strategic plan does have a price tag. The underlying business strategy is to realize a positive return on investment (ROI) by quickly achieving specific and aligned organizational goals.

Business owners to executives have a plethora of resources from which to select the type of strategic plan along with the numerous business coaches, business consultants or national training organizations who can help them to create strategic plans. Yet, most of the outside resources fail to deliver a quick positive return on investment.

The creation of a strategic plan has 3 costs: money, time and results. When analyzing the cost of a strategic plan, each of these costs should be reviewed and compared.

    • Money
    • A recent review of a national seminar offering strategic planning 3 day to 2-day workshops indicated a cost ranging between $2,000 and $1,500. These dollar costs do not include travel, lodging along with salaries.

When compared to business coaches or consultants offering strategic planning on site or off site with fees ranging from $3,000 to $10,000 and up, the national seminars appear to be the best deal, but are they?

Research suggests that a one time exposure to a learning event. If there are not additional opportunities for performance that being the application of learning, then the money spent whether $1,500 to $12,000 is moot. This is why most traditional training offered through a 2 or 3 day event fails to deliver a positive return on investment.

    • Time
    • How much time does it take to create an executable strategic plan? From my experience has a business coach, this ranges from 20 to 30 hours to create the plan and then another 10 to 20 hours to monitor the plan so that the business goals are achieved. Two day to three day traditional training seminars or retreats fall short of the basic time necessary to develop a solid strategic plan. Also, these off site locations do not allow the participants time to do complete the necessary research or answer specific questions necessary to operationalize the strategic plan.

    • Results
    • What results are you getting from the traditional approach to strategic planning? First, the origins of the word strategy mean as a general to deceive the enemy. In today?s world, that means to out think and simultaneously out perform the competition.

From the initial meeting, a good strategic planning process will begin to deliver immediate results. Additionally every strategic plan should contain a strategic action plan that is everyone works from on a daily basis. In this way the results are almost continuous.

When a strategic plan is created off site in a few days, the likelihood of immediate results has been greatly diminished because of this learning structure. By crunching some numbers, we can immediately see the advantage for a longer planning cycle

A 3 days event probably means 6 hours per day planning or a total of 18 hours at an investment of $2,000. Adding in 3 nights of lodging, meals and miscellaneous experiences results in at least another $600. The hourly rate for this seminar per participant is at least $145.00. And what results or deliverables do you have from such an investment?

Comparing a 10-week (3 hours per week) on site with 6 monthly follow-ups suggests at least 39 hours. Since there are no travel costs, the hourly rate based upon a $5,000 fee is $128.45. And the results are a tangible, active, dynamic and interactive strategic plan that is being executed every week ensuring measurable outcomes.

Given that most national seminars require payment up front and do not offer a money back guarantee, this becomes a win win for them and a potential lose lose for your firm. If you charge the costs, then your hourly rate has just increased not to mention the charges for any other costs. However, if you can locate a strategic business coach who provides a money back guarantee in some format and will work with you by offering non-traditional forms of payment, then what makes more sense?

If you are deciding to seek some help in the creation of you strategic plan, congratulations. Just make sure that you have analyzed ALL the costs and have a better idea of your potential ROI.

Increasing Sales with Email Marketing | Email Marketing Best ...

Activetrail knows that marketing with email is a terrific way to produce new revenue, market your business, while remaining in touch with prospects and customers. Making use of this powerful tool, you?ll find yourself increasing your sales regularly. Listed below are many essential email marketing tips to help you begin accumulating more income in your product sales.

    Emails Need to be Personal

If you are searching for some great marketing ideas to improve your income, consider making your email messages personal. People appreciate it if you use their name. A small store attracts buyers because of their personalized services. When we walk into a neighborhood store, the manager and salespeople know us by name. This same effect can be achieved on the Internet by ensuring that marketing and advertising email messages are created and addressed in a personal way as well. No one wants to receive a message saying ?Unknown Recipient?.

Subject Lines Should Reflect your Message

Remember to keep the subject line of your emails accurate. They need to reflect the content of your message. The topic of your subject line needs to catch the interest of your audience, but it must be relevant to your campaign message. If not, you will start to lose the confidence of your respective subscribers. Generally, if the first few sentences don?t connect with the topic, most people will stop reading the message. Make certain that your subject line doesn?t contain spam. There are many words that will automatically trigger the spam filers, and if that happens, you won?t stand a chance. Research what words constitute spam, and make sure you never use them. Remember, most people simply glance at the subject line to decide whether to read the message, trash it, or simply mark the email as spam. Use that small window of opportunity, because you never get a second chance.

    Test Your Campaigns

Testing your campaign is unquestionably one of the most important things you can address. Make your own test groups, sending out several modified campaigns to different test groups. Consider the structure of your message in terms of imagery, subject line, call to action, and content.

Always test the hyperlinks inside the email message, ensuring that you have formatted them properly, making sure they are live links and they function correctly, targeting the designated landing page. Broken and outdated links create a bad reflection on your company brand. Testing your campaign messages will determine how successful your message is. Testing your campaigns is the only objective way to discover what works best when aiming to convert the prospects on your list into greater product sales and repeat buys for your company.

With Activetrail software at your side, you can flawlessly test every campaign with live stats, able to adapt and modify what you need, immediately and effortlessly.

You cannot argue with Facts and Stats

It is a known fact that email marketing is a profitable technique for the Internet entrepreneur and off-line business owner, as well. Email marketing is still considered to be the most cost-effective and economical online marketing strategies, when striving to remain in touch with your customers. With over 1 Billion Internet users maintaining an email account, the opportunities are endless.

    • Over 60% of users receive opt-in email from online businesses.
    • At least 80% of Internet Shoppers have made at least one purchase from an email marketing promotion.
    • Over 30% have made an instantaneous purchase online in a direct response to an email marketing campaign.

Employ Email Marketing Strategies that Work

Every online marketer needs to work on developing customer relationships while developing and establishing their credibility with their prospects as well. Giving away free and valuable information such as a white paper on your subject niche, an eBook that shares great tips or a ?how to? approach of instructions, automatically increases your chances of converting browsers to buyers ? converting buyers to lifelong customers. You are marketing to people. Put yourself in their place and ask yourself what would appeal to you? What would bring you a step closer to buying a product or service?

    Announcing Specials and Discounts

Opt-in email lists are worth more than gold to an email marketer. Do not use them carelessly. Letting your recipients know they are valuable and are greatly appreciated is another way to engage a consumer. Sending out an announcement periodically, offering specials, closeouts, and discounts can increase your conversion rates.

Use your demographics to benefit your recipients. Send them coupons to stores that are within a reasonable distance from their homes. More than likely, they will use those coupons if the offer is truly a savings and it is not a hardship to redeem the coupon received.

Do not overwhelm your prospects and customers with constant sales. That strategy may backfire causing them to doubt your sincerity and look on your products and services as worthless. Too much of a good thing may create suspicion. Keep your offers fresh.

Respect your Audience ? ask for their Opinions

Following up with your recipients after a sale or special offer is sent, will help you discover if your email marketing campaigns are successful in their eyes. Never assume that your positive subjective opinion about your campaign is the truth for your audience. Take the time to send out thoughtfully created customer surveys, asking for their honest opinions and suggestions. Once received, implement the ones you feel are practical.

The team at Activetrail knows that listening to your audience is the highest form of respect and consideration any marketer can show.
