Chinese Workers Making Counterfeit Rare Coins

Here's another one of the Chinese counterfeiting ring's coin presses, this time being operated by two men. As you can see, the machinery looks pretty old and maybe not very well maintained. Certainly it's very filthy, but the work these men are doing is filthy in itself, making counterfeit rare coins to pollute our coin collecting marketplace.

UNESCO Makes Nativity Church A World Heritage Endangered Site, Israel, US Abstain

PARIS ? UNESCO's World Heritage committee on Friday approved a Palestinian bid to place the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem on its list of sites of World Heritage in Danger ? a move seen by some nations as dangerously mixing politics and culture.

Palestinian spokeswoman Hanan Ashrawi said the vote was an affirmation of Palestinian sovereignty over the site that marks the place where Christians believe Jesus was born.

Israel angrily denounced the vote, with Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Ilana Stein saying the decision "has turned UNESCO into a theater of the absurd."

"This is a sad day for the World Heritage Committee," she said.

The 21-member committee, meeting in St. Petersburg, Russia, voted 13-6 to include the church and pilgrimage route, located in the Israeli-controlled West Bank, on its list of sites. There were two abstentions.

The drive to get the Nativity church quickly recognized as a World Heritage site was part of the Palestinians' bid to win international recognition since attempts to establish a Palestinian state through negotiations with Israel are frozen.

The United States was among nations opposed to the Palestinian proposal of an emergency candidacy for the iconic Christian site, shortcutting what is usually an 18-month-long process to apply for World Heritage recognition. Neither the United States nor Israel was on the committee. The U.S. ambassador to UNESCO, David Killion, said the United States is "profoundly disappointed."

The church ? which drew some 2 million visitors last year and parts of which are 1,500 years old ? stands above the grotto that Christians believe was the birthplace of Jesus. The Palestinian application asks for recognition as a site of "outstanding universal value" urgently in need of attention.

The application cited lack of regular restoration of the church due to the political situation since 1967 when Israel occupied the territories, and difficulties procuring equipment because of lack of free movement imposed by Israeli forces.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization voted to admit Palestine as a full member in October. The emergency candidacy for the church clearly showed the Palestinians' intention of making the most of their position, after a failure to join the main U.N. body because Palestine is not a recognized state.

The Palestinian application to place the Church on the list showed that they plan to put forward other sites for prestigious World Heritage recognition, eventually linking various landmarks to the life of Jesus.

"The message to Israel today is that unilateral actions will not work and that Israel cannot continue challenging the world despite its powerful allies," Ashrawi said.

Killion, the U.S. ambassador, said "this body should not be politicized." His statement noted the candidacy was opposed by a UNESCO experts committee, whose conclusions are almost always heeded.

The three churches acting as custodians of the site had also been opposed. The Greek Orthodox, Armenian and Roman Catholic churches keep the site under a so-called Status Quo agreement dating to the Ottoman empire, and fear the Palestinian action will upset that delicate balance.

"The site clearly has tremendous religious and historical significance," Killion's statement said. "However, the emergency procedure used in this instance is reserved only for extreme cases."

Stein, the Israeli Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, said those who voted in favor of the Nativity candidacy "have given themselves up as pawns in the service of the Palestinians at the expense of UNESCO's professionalism and good name."

While the church needs restoration, including repair of a leaky roof, it was not seen by the experts committee as being in imminent threat of destruction ? the criteria usually reserved for the emergency procedure.

A site nominated by Israel depicting human evolution at Mount Carmel, the Nahal Me'arot/Wadi el-Mughara Caves, also was inscribed on the World Heritage list. That nomination, like all others under consideration in St. Petersburg, went through regular channels ? not the emergency route.

PITTSBURGH?Carnegie Mellon University in collaboration with Lehigh University will manage a new $1 million manufacturing and innovation development program to help foster a renaissance in Pennsylvania manufacturing globally.

"Manufacturing adds more than $75 billion in value each year to our state's economy, and it is paramount that we do all that we can to grow that sector of our economy,'' said Governor Tom Corbett. "Through partnering with our world-class research institutions, we can provide the tools needed for Pennsylvania companies to create jobs and compete in the global economy.''

The Research for Advanced Manufacturing in Pennsylvania program (RAMP) is funded through the Department of Community and Economic Development's Discovered in PA ? Developed in PA (D2PA) program. The D2PA program, created by the Corbett administration, is designed to build capacity to better support Pennsylvania's businesses and to spur creativity and innovation in the allocation of economic development services.

The RAMP program is designed to tap the research and innovation capabilities of both CMU and Lehigh and provide technical and economic benefits to the state's small, medium and large-sized manufacturing companies by enabling knowledge transfer, the discovery of new technologies and retention of highly-skilled students, according to Matthew A. Sanfilippo, executive director of CMU's Institute for Complex Engineered Systems (ICES).

RAMP will operate as a competitive funding program that provides small incentive grants (1 to 1.5 years in duration) to faculty-led teams at both CMU and Lehigh that engage in short-term innovation projects in cooperation with a Pennsylvania manufacturing company. Each successful RAMP proposal will be awarded between $25,000 and $75,000 to help support graduate students working with successful participating companies.

"This program is designed to help Pennsylvania companies invent and develop advanced manufacturing capabilities to compete in a global marketplace,'' said Gary Fedder, ICES director and a professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department and the Robotics Institute.

"Additionally, RAMP will build off the successful history at Lehigh and CMU of partnering with Pennsylvania's companies and provide a gateway for these companies to tap into the unique technical capabilities that are available at these research universities,'' added Richard Sause, director of Lehigh University's ATLSS Engineering Research Center.

The new program falls on the heels of the U.S. government's tack to forge new ways to collaborate on discovery, commercialization and the building of workforce skills to ensure that advanced manufacturing creates jobs in the United States.

CMU research has shown that moving manufacturing overseas to developing countries can reduce the economic viability of emerging technologies.

"We find that in the case of early-stage industries with immature processes that when U.S. firms shift production from the U.S. to countries like China, the most advanced technologies that were developed in the U.S. no longer pay," said Erica Fuchs, an assistant professor in the Department of Engineering and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon. "With changes in the innovation ecosystem over the last few decades, policy and other funding mechanisms to support manufacturing, technology development and commercialization activities by these small and medium sized enterprises may be of growing importance to regional and national economic development."

What roofing contractors richmond To Know Before You Begin Home

What roofing contractors richmond To Know Before You Begin Home Improvement Project

Performing your own home improvements doesn?t have to be overwhelming, but people experienced with remodeling, repairing, and improving their homes know that a few simple tips and tricks can make a huge difference. If you?re thinking of embarking on some new home improvements, bear the following tips in mind to make sure everything goes right and nothing goes wrong.

If lubricant alone doesn?t solve your door squeaking problems, try using wire wool. Simply remove the hinge from the door and dismantle it by removing the pin in the center.. Wipe away any dirt, rust, and any other excess debris with the wool and replace the hinge pin and return the hinge to the door. Then apply lubricant.

When it comes to home improvement, be sure that none of the workers that will be working on your home have a criminal record. This is important to the safety of you and your family, and also for the security of your belongings. It is not uncommon for you to ask for the names of all the workers that will be on the property. Background checks are available online.

If you want to make your pathway in front of your house look nicer, you can line your pathway with little lights. This adds a touch of elegance and class to your walkway. Additionally, it gives your guests targeted light so that they can find the way to your door more easily.

Try keeping your home insulated. Insulating your walls is a relatively low cost home improvement that will help you save money in the long kingston roofing contractor run, along with protecting the environment. Keeping your house insulated not only keeps it warm in winter, but it also keeps it cool in the summer.

When you need to replace a lock, you can opt to replace the entire assembly, or you can just replace the cylinder. The cylinder is the part of the lock that performs the locking action. If you?ve lost your key and want to change the lock for safety purposes, you can do a cylinder replacement. If you?re upgrading the lock for added security or to make your door look better, replace the entire unit.

When thinking about doing a home improvement project, consider upgrading your appliances. Get rid of your old appliances. Nothing looks worse than having dated appliances in a home that also cost a considerable amount of money because they are not energy efficient. Sleek new appliances add value to the home and will help save energy too.

Know your building codes. If you plan on doing work yourself, you should always be aware of how that work should be done, and what needs to accompany it. You do not want to finish a job only to have a building inspector tell you that you violated a code in the process.

Before using your kitchen cabinet drawers to put your utensils and other things in, consider a solution to keep them clean. A lot of discount and dollar stores sell vinyl wallpaper that has an adhesive back. Cut a piece of the adhesive wallpaper to fit your drawer, then peel off the backing and adhere. Taking this step will prevent your drawers from getting damaged and the wallpaper can be easily roofing company richmond peeled off and replaced.

Inspect your basement regularly to make sure it is dry. Older basements, in particular, have a propensity to leak. If you find a leak inspect your walls on both the outside and the inside. You might be able to stop leaks yourself by applying sealant. If the repairs are more involved you might want to hire a professional.

A great way to make your home look new again is to slap on a new coat of paint on the outside of your home. If you choose a brighter color, your house will glow like a new pearl and will be the envy of everyone on your neighborhood block.

If you frequently read in bed, consider installing a wall-mounted swing-arm or flexible-neck lighting fixture in the bedroom. Unlike overhead lights or bedside lamps, these lights can be easily adjusted to provide just enough light for reading without keeping your bed mate awake with a harsh glow. This will also help you to prevent eye strain from reading in dim light.

Something that can be done in the way of home improvement is to theme your rooms. For example you may want to have a teddy bear theme in one of your bathrooms and have a native Indian theme in your living room. Doing this will add a level of flare and comfort to your home.

These simple tips should have helped you see some new perspectives on home improvement, which will get you thinking creatively about what will work and won?t work in your own home. Learning to think cleverly about how you make improvements will be a valuable skill as you gain experience and tackle more complex home improvement jobs.

Debby floods neighborhoods in northern Fla.

SOPCHOPPY, Fla. (AP) ? Debby destroyed homes and businesses, washed away roads and flooded neighborhoods in Florida before the once-large tropical storm drifted out to sea Wednesday, leaving behind a sopping mess.

At least three people were killed in the storm. More than 100 homes and businesses were flooded and officials warned the waters may not recede until next week in some places. The storm knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of customers, though most had electricity restored by the time Debby left the state.

The tropical storm formed in the Gulf on Saturday and gradually made its way across the Florida, drenching the state for several days before it weakened to a depression. The windy, rainy weather ruined vacations for some.

In Live Oak, a small city in northern Florida, water was up to the roofs of some homes and cars were submerged. In other places, residents stood in several feet of water as they checked out the damage to their homes.

"The water came in so fast last night," said resident Johnny Torres. "We were lucky to get out what we could."

In Crawfordville, a small town located in the crook of Florida's elbow just south of Tallahassee, main roads were impassable.

"There's more water that anybody, no matter how old they are, has ever remembered seeing," Wakulla County Commission Chairman Alan Brock said. "It's not just people on the river, it's neighborhoods, it's places that have never been flooded."

Even though Debby lost its strength, emergency management officials said they expect the aftermath to continue causing problems with swollen lakes and rivers, along with record rainfall.

"It's not over. We've got a long way to go," said Brian Koon, the director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management. "We'll be dealing with flooding for the next week."

Several of the state's rivers in the north reached historic levels, Koon said. The Sopchoppy River reached its peak Wednesday at 36.1 feet. Before the storm, it was 8 feet.

Don Shemwell was in his summer home along the river. He had not left since Sunday because the only road leading to it was under more than 1 foot of water. At one point, the water surrounded his house, but it never actually entered the home.

"I was convinced we were going to lose everything," Shemwell said. "There's a lady who has lived her for 34 years, and she's never seen anything close to this. I mean, how often does some place get 30 inches of rain in 48 hours."

More than 200 people stayed in shelters across the state Tuesday evening.

Koon's department and FEMA will begin the formal damage assessment process on Friday. There was no immediate cost estimate for the damage.

The storm dumped about 10 inches of rain on Tampa and nearby more than 15 inches on the small city of Brooksville. Cities in the state's north fared worse: In Wakulla County ? home to Crawfordville ? 26 inches of rain fell over a 72-hour period, according to the National Weather Service.

Authorities on Wednesday confirmed another storm-related death near St. Petersburg.

Armando Perez, 71, was found dead in flood waters outside of his Indian Rocks Beach home, the Pinellas County sheriff's office said. Perez had a heart attack and officials said he likely couldn't out of the flood to get help.

Over the weekend, a woman died in a tornado in Florida and a man disappeared in the rough surf off the coast of Alabama.

In the Tampa Bay area, clouds gave way to spotty sunshine Wednesday and the water that had flooded some roads began to evaporate. City workers in Tampa carted felled trees and raked debris off Bayshore Boulevard, a 4.5-mile stretch that hugs Tampa Bay. It had been largely underwater and closed for days.

The Salvation Army handed out 1,000 personal hygiene kits to residents in three counties and would bring a mobile shower unit to people displaced by the floods in the Lake City area.

Along the state's beach communities, other worries emerged.

In Manatee County, nearly 200 endangered sea turtles lost their nests, while in Pinellas County, entire colonies of nesting seabirds were wiped out.

"I've never seen anything this bad here in this area," said Barb Walker of the Clearwater Audubon Society.

Walker added that some eagle nests were also destroyed and more than a dozen baby deer were separated from their mothers during the storm ? but most of the babies were reunited with their herds.

There is some hope for the sea turtle population, said Suzi Fox, the director of Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch and Shorebird Monitoring.

Although she estimated that some 180 nests in the county were destroyed, she saw 11 new nests on Wednesday morning. The turtles have six weeks of nesting season left.

"It's a gorgeous day. The waves have died down, the sun is out and the beach is flat," she said. "We have 11 nests laid on our beach as of last night and we're so excited. That's very encouraging."

JPMorgan's trading loss could hit $9 billion ? report

Yuri Gripas / REUTERS

JPMorgan Chase's CEO Jamie Dimon testifies before lawmakers.

By Roland Jones

The loss from JP Morgan?s botched trade could total as much as $9 billion, far higher than the original estimates of the shortfall, according to a report in The New York Times.

JP Morgan?s CEO Jamie Dimon estimated in May that the bank?s losses from the trade, which came as a result of a bad bet on credit derivatives, would be $2 billion, and might double within the next few quarters.

The Times? story cites an internal report that JPMorgan made in April that showed the losses could reach $8 billion to $9 billion, in a worst-case scenario. But the newspaper also noted that because JPMorgan has already been unwinding its positions, some expect that the losses will not be more than $6 billion to $7 billion.

The newspaper also said the bank?s exit from its money-losing trade is happening faster than many expected. JP Morgan had previously said it hoped to clear its position by early next year, the Times said.

Dimon has appeared before lawmakers on Capitol Hill in recent weeks to explain the origin of the multibillion-dollar trading loss.

Lawmakers peppered him with questions about regulation and risky practices at the bank, but did not press him to give an update on the estimated trading loss.

Reuters contributed to this report.

CNBC's Kate Kelly reports that JPMorgan's trading loss is likely to be less than $9 billion.

Huawei pushes Ascend D Quad production to August, pins it on processor hiccups

Huawei Ascend D Quad hands-on

Those of us yearning to bring Huawei's Ascend D Quad on summer vacation will have to file that dream away for next year. The company's consumer division chief, Yu Chengdong, has pushed back the phone's volume production from this month to August. Blame for the setback rests squarely on that custom-developed K3V2 processor -- there have been "technical problems" getting it ready, if we go by Huawei's less than precise explanation. The timing certainly isn't what we'd call ideal: now that the Galaxy S III and One X are both common features of the smartphone landscape, the Ascend D Quad's performance won't be turning nearly as many heads when it arrives. We'll have to make do with the solid Ascend P1 in the meantime.

USC Student Shooting: Could Police Have Averted Tragedy By Following Up On An Earlier Shooting TIp?

This story comes courtesy of Neon Tommy.

By Catherine Green

A key witness in the February shooting linked to the murders of two USC graduate students told police he could identify the gunman nearly two months before Wu Ying and Qu Ming were killed, court documents show.

The two Chinese electrical engineering students were gunned down April 11 around 1 a.m. inside a double-parked BMW on South Raymond Avenue, less than a mile from campus. Within hours, Los Angeles Police Department investigators had matched shell casings found at the scene to two other South L.A. shootings--one on Dec. 3, 2011 and another at a birthday party Feb. 12.

Police retraced their steps in the February investigation to quickly identify 20-year-old Bryan Barnes as a primary suspect. Barnes and his accused accomplice, 19-year-old Javier Bolden, were arrested May 18 and are scheduled to enter pleas Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court on charges related to the three shootings.

A Neon Tommy exclusive report earlier this month provided details of detectives' interview with a witness to the February shooting. During their April 11 meeting, the witness used a department computer to pull up Barnes' Facebook page and exclaimed, "That's him! That's the guy that shot [one of the Feb. 12 victims].

The interview took place within 20 hours of the USC students' murders and was a major break in the case. But the latest batch of search warrants obtained by Neon Tommy shows the witness in fact told detectives two months earlier he could identify the gunman who opened fire at the Feb. 12 party.

Deputy Chief Pat Gannon of the Southwest Division said he might have handled the February investigation differently. "I think the appropriate thing to do is to try to work with that witness as best you can to help identify the person," he said.

"If it was me, I'd want to somehow secure the information off of Facebook. [The tip] is important, absolutely important, but you have to have some corroborating evidence," Gannon continued. "In most cases, you like to have two or more witnesses that can identify your suspect."

It's unclear how vigorously police pursued the tip from the witness. Details in warrants filed Feb. 23 and March 29 outlined a different route in their investigation.

Those warrants ordered Metro PCS and Sprint Nextel to produce phone records for two numbers dating back to Dec. 3 -- the same night 20-year-old Timothy Hall was shot at a party in South L.A. Ballistics testing has since tied the December shooting to Barnes and Bolden, though police won't say when they made the connection with the shooting at the February birthday party.

The search warrants include details about the birthday party and the aftermath of the shooting. Police, responding to radio calls of an "ADW Shooting"--assault with a deadly weapon--arrived at a party rental hall near the intersection of 51st Street and Western Avenue in the early hours of Feb. 12.

Officers found 21-year-old Deionce Davance shot twice in the head and several times in the stomach. Another partygoer, Zanae Flowers, had been shot in the right calf. Both were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Davance is now paralyzed.

Detective Erbie Phillips of the LAPD's 77th Street Community Division got the case the next day.

The warrants detail Phillips' Feb. 13 meeting with the witness who would later identify Barnes. "Later that day, [the witness] came to 77th Station and met with Affiant. [The witness] advised he was standing with [Davance] when he was shot. [The witness] advised he knows who the shooter is because he located a picture of the shooter on Facebook."

But the reports do not say what detectives did with the information. Instead, Phillips' account jumps ahead to Feb. 20, when he used phone numbers provided by party guests to track down a man named "K witt it," the promoter responsible for the party at 5117 S. Western Ave.

According to the warrants, Phillips called and spoke briefly with a man who claimed to be K witt it. When pressed for his legal name, the man hung up and did not answer the phone again.

Police requested phone records for K witt it and a party guest to help determine "who attended the party and possible location of alleged suspect or suspects," Phillips' reports read.

The Feb. 23 warrant was not served, but Metro PCS produced records sought in the March 29 warrant by April 9--two days before Ying and Ming were killed.

Deputy Chief Gannon said he didn't see a reason detectives would choose to sit on the information provided by the witness in February. "No, no. That's an important piece," he said. "Here, I'm really speculating on that, but I don't want to downplay it."

The reports do not include what follow-up questions, if any, detectives may have asked the witness when he said he could identify the gunman on Facebook. Did Phillips, for example, ask him to call up Barnes' profile so he could see his name and other identifying information?

"You know, he may have," Gannon said. "It just may not be included in that information you have." He explained detectives also keep a chronological record of their work that often includes details beyond those in a warrant's report.

Whatever might be in Phillips' record, Gannon openly shared his concerns that more aggressive work on the December and February shootings could have prevented tragedy in April.

"Not every case gets solved really, really quickly," Gannon said. "I wish it wasn't that way. And I wish in hindsight that we had tied those first two cases together, and that we did have Barnes and Bolden in custody. Maybe if that had been the case, these two young people from USC would never have been killed. That's a burden--for me and for the investigators to carry with us. But I just don't want anybody to think it's for lack of trying."

The USC students' murders and the two earlier shootings are now being handled by Criminal Gang Homicide Division detectives Vince Carreon and Eloy Ochoa. When reached by phone, Carreon repeated the District Attorney's instructions not to address specifics of the investigation. "I can't really give you much--or anything really," he said Thursday, "because of the seriousness of this case."

Carreon also said Monday's scheduled arraignment for Barnes and Bolden wouldn't loosen restrictions on what he can say. "It will have to come out in trial."

Prudential Mortgage Capital closes first U.K. commercial real estate ...

NEWARK, N.J.?(BUSINESSWIRE)?

Prudential Mortgage Capital Company has closed a $ 108 million commercial real estate loan in the U.K., the first financing since launching its European business earlier this year. Prudential Mortgage Capital Company is the commercial mortgage lending business of Prudential Financial, Inc. (NYSE: PRU).

The loan is secured by a portfolio of U.K. properties: four multi-tenanted office properties in central London and a grocery-anchored retail property in the historic town of Bath. The 11-year financing marks Prudential?s first secured commercial real estate debt transaction in Europe since the opening of its London advisory office in January 2012. The portfolio?s sponsor, the O&H Group, is a family run business with considerable real estate holdings and development projects in central London and throughout the U.K.

In 2012 Prudential is targeting $ 500 million (?325 million, ?400 million) of long-term, fixed-rate senior debt transactions in Europe, with the ability to do significantly more than this. The European program is similar to the loan structures the company offers in the U.S., and as in the U.S., there is the ability to fund individual transactions of significant size. All debt will be denominated in local currency and secured by income-producing real estate. Initially the company is focusing on office, logistics, multifamily, and retail properties in and around large population centers such as London, Paris, and the major cities in Germany. On the European continent such financing transactions may also be structured in collaboration with local banks.

?The diversification we can achieve by investing a portion of our portfolio outside of the U.S., whether it?s Europe, Japan, or Mexico, is very valuable,? said Thor Orndahl, a managing director who oversees Prudential Mortgage Capital Company?s non-U.S. mortgage platform. ?The current market dislocation has provided the opening we have been looking for, and our plan is to be active in Europe for many years to come.?

Drew Abernethy, head of European Origination advice, said, ?Prudential is very pleased to have closed this first transaction so soon after introducing their its European program. It illustrates the strength of the Prudential platform globally, a commitment to Europe specifically, and an earnest belief that clients like O&H should have access to the type of long-term financing that they want.?

Established in 1982, the O&H Group is a privately owned business with more than 50 employees and net assets exceeding ?600 million. Headquartered in Mayfair, the key principals have worked together for decades building a large development and core property portfolio. ?We have been extremely impressed by the way the Prudential team understood and accommodated our long term business requirements and we are delighted to be involved in their first European transaction. We look forward to building on this relationship,? said David Gabbay, Chairman of the O&H Group.

Prudential Mortgage Capital Company is a national full-service, commercial and multifamily mortgage finance business with $ 72 billion in assets under management and administration as of March 31, 2012. Leveraging a 135-year history of real estate finance, the company offers one of the most comprehensive lines of real estate finance products and originates loans for Fannie Mae DUS?, Freddie Mac Program Plus? and specialized affordable housing programs; FHA; Conduit; Prudential?s general account and proprietary balance sheet program; and other institutional investors. The company maintains a loan servicing portfolio of approximately $ 68.8 billion, as of March 31, 2012. For more information, please visit http://www.prumortgagecapital.com.

Prudential Financial, Inc. (NYSE: PRU), a financial services leader with approximately $ 943 billion of assets under management as of March 31, 2012, has operations in the United States, Asia, Europe, and Latin America. Prudential?s diverse and talented employees are committed to helping individual and institutional customers grow and protect their wealth through a variety of products and services, including life insurance, annuities, retirement-related services, mutual funds and investment management. NFL players want new bounty investigation

NFL logo
NFL logo
New York (Sports Xchange) -

The head of the NFL Players Association called Friday for the re-opening of the probe that led to four players being suspended for their alleged roles in the New Orleans Saints' bounty scandal.

NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith said on NBCSports.com's Pro Football Talk Live that rather than close the investigation, he'd like to see the entire process re-opened for additional examination and scrutiny.

To that end, Smith plans to talk with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell about not only reconsidering reopening the investigation, but also to illustrate the fact that Smith believes the investigation process was flawed and failed.

"Frankly, I believe that the investigators let the commissioner down," Smith said. "Our hope, and certainly it will be a message from me to the league soon, is that given all of the recantations and all of the contradictions and, as exemplified by the video, all of the things that are clearly not clear, shouldn't we be taking another hard look about where this investigation failed the commissioner?"

Smith believes some of the NFL's evidence supporting proof of a bounty system is flawed and that suspended players Anthony Hargrove, Will Smith, Scott Fujita and Jonathan Vilma is questionable at the very least.

"Virtually everyone is wondering whether this process has been fair and whether we've achieved our goal of finding the truth," Smith said. "We shouldn't be in a world where players are being punished for something that is inconclusive and unclear."

Smith also continues to maintain that the players did not intentionally seek to injure players on opposing teams for monetary gain, nor was the investigation fair and complete.

"It's inconsistent with what our players stand for," Smith said. "It's inconsistent with everything we've done to make this game safer."

News and Society -Crime News Blog: How to Best Locate and Use ...

Background checks are among the most useful tools available to protect ourselves. Thanks to many online background check services, it has never been easier to access information about the new people that come into your life. Although we would like to believe that people are generally good-natured, there may be individuals out there that don't have your best interest at heart. Checking for criminal records online is not over-the-top or exaggerated behavior; instead it's the best step you can take to protect your well-being and the safety of others around you.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, in 2009, there were 4.3 million violent crimes, 15.6 million property crimes and 133,000 personal thefts committed against American residents. These statistics are widespread, with crimes occurring in all 50 states, in urban and rural areas and among all ethnic groups. While we can't possibly control the fate of each potentially dangerous situation, we can find criminal records to scan the people that are new to our lives and ensure that they don't have a criminal record.

There are many different people that can benefit from a criminal record lookup, including landlords, employers and everyday people. With a variety of software and tools to find criminal records, you may not know who to go to first. After all, you want to ensure that your efforts to be proactive will pay off by gathering accurate, up-to-date information regarding the person of interest.

Many sites provide relevant information thanks to the hundreds of millions of criminal records that are filtered through for each search. Databases are updated regularly, and all information presented is as truthful as any private investigator would provide you with. Best of all, this information is available directly online so that you don't have to wait another minute to begin protecting your future.

Do your homework and look for a site that is reliable and accurate, to search criminal records online, but also to find criminal records is simple and headache free. Even if you're not technologically savvy, these databases are very easy to use and provide instant results. All you have to do is plug in the name of the person you're looking to search, choose the last known state he or she lived in and hit the search button. There are optional fields to fill out a birth date or middle initial for more accurate results, but otherwise the process is as simple as that.

If you are faced with any uncertainties along the way, chat support is available. For example, if the person you're searching for has a common name like Jane Doe, you may have pages of results and find yourself unsure of which Jane Doe is the right one. Chat support can help you make the right selection so that you're not reading the wrong information. Better yet, criminal record searches can be narrowed down so that you can focus specifically on one aspect.

Being cautious and proactive is being smart, so never hesitate to take advantage of criminal background checks that can cease a dangerous partnership before it starts.

Lichen survives in space: Could it colonize planets by hitching rides on asteroids?

ScienceDaily (June 23, 2012) ? You can freeze it, thaw it, vacuum dry it and expose it to radiation but still life survives. ESA's research on the International Space Station is giving credibility to theories that life came from outer space -- as well as helping to create better sunscreens.

In 2008 scientists sent the suitcase-sized Expose-E experiment package to the Space Station filled with organic compounds and living organisms to test their reaction to outer space.

When astronauts venture on a spacewalk, hours are spent preparing protective suits to survive the hostile conditions. No effort was made to protect the bacteria, seeds, lichen and algae attached to the outside of the Space Station, however.

"We are exploring the limits of life," explains ESA's Ren? Demets.

Our atmosphere does a wonderful job of protecting life on Earth by absorbing harmful UV rays and keeping temperatures relatively stable.

In contrast, the space samples endured the full power of the Sun's rays. The samples were insulated somewhat by the Space Station but still had to cope with temperatures changing from -12?C to +40?C over 200 times as they orbited Earth.

The samples returned to Earth in 2009 and the results have now been published in a special issue of the journal Astrobiology.

Lichen have proven to be tough cookies -- back on Earth, some species continue to grow normally.

Ren? explains, "These organisms go into a dormant state waiting for better conditions to arrive."

The lichen have attracted interest from cosmetic companies. They can survive the full power of the Sun for 18 months, so knowing more could lead to new ingredients for sunscreen.

Living organisms surviving in open space supports the idea of 'panspermia' -- life spreading from one planet to another, or even between solar systems.

It seems possible that organisms could colonize planets by hitching rides on asteroids. ESA is probing this intriguing theory further on future Station missions with different samples.

Former METAL CHURCH Singer RONNY MUNROE Interviewed By 'The Musician's Voice' (Audio)

Mark Uricheck of The Musician's Voice recently conducted an interview with former METAL CHURCH and current TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA vocalist Ronny Munroe. You can now stream the entire chat using the audio player below.

Munroe's new solo album, "Lords Of The Edge", came out on October 18, 2011 via Rat Pak Records. The CD features the guitar mastery of Stu Marshall (EMPIRES OF EDEN), Chris Caffery (TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA, SAVATAGE), and Michael Wilton (QUEENSR?CHE) and is described in a press release as "a true metal offering that delivers an onslaught of fist-pumping, guitar-driven heavy metal."

"We wanted to create something that was totally new, but at the same time, true metal fans could hear everything that we were influenced by growing up in the classic metal era," said Ronny. "'Lords Of The Edge' sounds a little bit like what would happen if you put METAL CHURCH's 'Light In The Dark' CD into a blender with QUEENSR?CHE's first EP and JUDAS PRIEST's 'Painkiller', then mixed it with some present-day themes and a shot of pure adrenaline."

The opening tracks, "Just Breathe" and "Full Circle", offer fast and furious guitar assaults with high-energy vocals, while tracks like "The Vision" and "Touched By A Demon" take on a more haunting melodic approach that set up the listener for the gritty, power-metal influenced tracks like "Let Them Feed" and "Rock And A Hard Place".

"Lords Of The Edge" track listing:

01. Just Breathe

'Dredd' Trailer: Five Key Scenes

Karl Urban makes his debut as the helmeted arbiter of justice in the first official trailer for 'Dredd,' in theaters September 21.

He says he's the law — but do you believe him? Longtime "Judge Dredd" fans (heck, anyone old enough to have seen an R-rated movie in the 1990s) have plenty of reasons to be skeptical about "Dredd," the Pete Travis-directed adaptation of the "2000 AD" comic book, judging purely on how the Sylvester Stallone film of 1995 was handled. By all accounts, "Dredd" is not that film. It takes its inspiration from sources much closer to the original text and has a leading man — Karl Urban — who takes his job very seriously.

So did the "Dredd" trailer do it for you? It did it for us ... mostly. Here are five key elements from the "Dredd" trailer that informed our verdict.

Welcome to Mega City One
Gritty, impossibly huge and absolutely the last place on the planet you would ever want to live: that's Mega City One, and from the opening moments of the trailer, all of those points are clearly established. Hooligans run amok fueled by all kinds of illicit drugs, with one in particular gaining new traction: Slo-Mo, a dangerous product that "makes the brain feel as though time is passing at 1 percent of the normal speed." Why anyone would want to be on such a drug in the middle of Mega City One is beyond us, but it's certain to pave the way for some fantastic action, based on the trailer alone.

Big Ma-Ma's House
A hero is only as worthy as his villain, and in the case of "Dredd," the quality of the nemesis won't be a problem. Lena Headey of "Game of Thrones" fame is the bad guy here as Ma-Ma Madrigal, ruling the roost of a drug empire with enough ruthless efficiency to make Queen Cersei Lannister blush. Her scarred visage and crystal-clear goals — "If we play this right, we can take the whole city," she tells her underlings — make her a force to be reckoned with, and Headey seems to be having a ball in the role.

Judge and Be Judged
We'll get to Urban specifically in a second. In the meantime, look at all of the judges! Dredd explains their role in Mega City One thusly: "800 million people living in the ruin of the old world, and only one thing fighting for order in the chaos: the men and women of the Hall of Justice." Though "Dredd" will center mostly on the titular judge and his new trainee Cassandra Anderson (played by a bleach-blond Olivia Thirlby), it's nice to see some attention paid to the greater gaggle of law enforcers.

Fifty Shades of "Raid"
If you thought the plot of "Dredd" seemed a little familiar after watching the trailer, you're not losing it. There are undeniable similarities between this and "The Raid," the incredible Indonesian martial arts film from Gareth Evans that debuted this past spring. Ma-Ma Madrigal has her drug operation holed up in one massive tower that she has full control over, not unlike "The Raid" drug kingpin Tama. Also not unlike Tama, Madrigal commands all the tenants of her building to seek and destroy Dredd and Anderson. So, yes, the similarities are there, but there are more than enough differences in the setting, genre and characters — not to mention the action-dictating Slo-Mo — that we're more than happy to look the other way. (Besides, we'll take another "Raid" movie however we can get it, even if it's called "Dredd.")

Is He the Law?
That's the big question, isn't it? On paper, Karl Urban is a fantastic choice for Judge Dredd. In motion? That might be another story. His Dredd spits out a few too many one-liners for some folks' tastes — "negotiations are over," "the sentence is death," etc. — but he's got the look, the voice and the attitude down by our estimation. Whether or not that all adds up to a fully formed Dredd remains to be seen, but the trailer leaves us cautiously optimistic, if not fully sold, on Urban's performance.

"Dredd" is set to hit theaters on September 21.
