Rafat Ali, the founder of PaidContent.org, has launched a new venture called Skift. The company will target the business travel industry with a hybrid approach that serves up content and data for travelers as well as the market's suppliers.

So far, Skift has raised $500,000 in angel funding, which kicks in at launch and will be used to scale the operation going forward. Ali has self-funded the project to this point. There are a dozen investors including Chris Ahern, Gordon Crovitz, Alan Meckler, Luke Beatty, Tom Glocer and Vishal Gondal.

Ali says the travel vertical is ripe for disruption. "When I started looking at doing something in this industry I discovered the sources are very old-school. They are also very siloed in their sub-sectors. No one is bringing it all together in a Web-native, social-friendly fashion of the kind that exists in the media, tech or finance markets."

Phase one, he says, will be to create "a homepage for the industry," which to this point has largely been fed by aggregation software PublishThis. As the site expands, more content will be added through human curation and original reporting.

The plan is to create a b-to-b destination site for the business travel market, with the content supported by advertising?endemic trade advertisers as well as consumer-oriented advertisers looking for an audience of business travelers. But the site will not solely rely on ad revenue?or content.

Skift will also have a data services operation supported by a variety of subscription models. The data will initially be pulled in from publicly available sources, such as tourism, airport and arrival-departure data at the global and local levels. As the company grows, proprietary data will be added to the mix. This, says Ali, will be Skift's core value proposition.

"The better way to build a media company is not through content, but services. Media is a great way to build a brand, but the best way to scale is to figure out the data services that the industry and people will pay for."

Ali sold PaidContent.org's parent company ContentNext Media, Inc. to U.K.-based Guardian News & Media back in 2008 and left two years later, embarking on a glob-trotting adventure of his own as he figured out his next project.

In the meantime, Guardian News & Media put ContentNext on the block in 2011 and sold it to online tech publisher GigaOm in February this year.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Genetic test maker 23andMe is asking the Food and Drug Administration to approve its personalized DNA test in a move that, if successful, could boost acceptance of technology that is viewed skeptically by leading scientists who question its usefulness.

23andMe is part of a fledgling industry that allows consumers to peek into their genetic code for details about their ancestry and future health. The company's saliva-based kits have attracted scrutiny for claiming to help users detect whether they are likely to develop illnesses like breast cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer's.

The biology of how DNA variations actually lead to certain diseases is still poorly understood, and many geneticists say such tests are built on flimsy evidence.

For years, the Silicon Valley company has resisted government regulation, arguing that it simply provides consumers with information, not a medical service. But now company executives say they are seeking government approval ? and the scientific credibility that comes with it.

"It's the next step for us to work with the FDA and actually say, 'this is clinically relevant information and consumers should work with their physicians on what to do with it,' " said CEO and co-founder Anne Wojcicki, who is married to Google co-founder Sergey Brin. Google and Brin have invested millions in the privately held company, which is based in Mountain View, Calif.

Wojcicki says the shift in strategy reflects the growing scope of the company's test kit, which now measures the risks of developing more than 115 different diseases.

23andMe said Monday it submitted an initial batch of seven health-related tests to the FDA for review. The company plans to submit 100 additional tests in separate installments before the end of the year. Tests involving family history and nonmedical traits will not be reviewed, since they don't fall under FDA oversight.

Even some of the harshest critics of the genetic testing industry say 23andMe is taking the right approach.

Dr. James Evans of University of North Carolina said he considers much of the information reported by 23andMe, "relatively useless," and "in the realm of entertainment." He believes patients benefit more from pursuing a healthy lifestyle than parsing the potential risks of developing various diseases.

But as test makers begin analyzing larger portions of genetic code, there are rare cases when the findings may help doctors identify patients with a higher risk of treatable health problems, such as aneurysms or colon cancer.

"I think we've now entered an era where these direct-to-consumer offerings are beginning to have real medical relevance, and therefore I am in favor of them being done within some regulatory context," said Evans, a professor of genetics and medicine at UNC's Medical School.

The move may also give 23andMe a competitive edge over rivals like deCODE Genetics and Navigenics, which market similar tests. Those companies did not respond to requests for comment Monday.

"We really want to take a leadership role in this industry," said 23andMe's chief legal officer, Ashley Gould. The company says more than 150,000 people worldwide have used its test, which sells for $299 online.

The FDA already regulates a variety of genetic tests administered by health care providers, such as those given to pregnant women to detect cystic fibrosis in a developing fetus.

But it remains to be seen whether the FDA will endorse 23andMe's commercial approach, which sidesteps doctors by sending results directly to consumers. 23andMe and its peers believe there is a mainstream market for personalized genetic information, though it is still very much a niche field.

23andMe executives point out that they first contacted the FDA in 2007, before launching their product. The agency did not take an interest in the technology until 2010, when it issued letters to several testing companies, stating that their products are considered medical devices and must be approved as safe and effective.

Washington's pressure on the industry intensified a month later, when federal investigators issued a scathing report saying that companies like 23andMe produced misleading information of little to no use.

An undercover investigation by the Government Accountability Office found that four genetic testing companies delivered contradictory predictions based on the same person's DNA, which often contradicted the patient's actual medical history.

Proponents of genetic testing say 23andMe's bid for FDA approval is an important step in regulating an emerging application for genetic information.

"Many consumers are going to want to know this information, and you don't need a hospital to obtain it, so it's important to make sure it's well regulated," said Dr. Eric Lander, president and director of the Broad Institute, a genomic research center affiliated with Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. "I think 23andMe is taking a very forward-leaning step."

Last week, the Middleton Senior Legion team was in quite the scenario, hovering around the fourth and final playoff spot.

Because of Middleton's 6-1 loss to Newburyport on July 26 and Andover's win over Methuen the same night, the local Senior Legion squad finished one spot out of the Legion playoffs.

"We should be very strong next year if everyone returns, with a strong nucleus on young players coming through the Junior Legion program," said Kowalski. "We're only losing five players - three starters."

What helped get the team so far to nearly making the playoffs was its pitching. Each pitcher in the stable has been strong, beginning with Bobby Woodworth, whose no-hitter against Gloucester on July 22 was a season highlight. Woodworth, a Beverly resident, is a St. John?s Prep graduate and will go to Cornell next month.

Additionally, Jeff Daniels and Ben Panunzio, 2012 Masconomet graduates, have been "very productive," along with Phil Doyle, a Brooks School graduate headed to Villanova University.

The offense hasn?t been a juggernaut for the team, but there are some players who have especially helped Masconomet to their 11 wins.

Rory Garrison, a Middleton resident and St. John?s Prep grad going on to Providence, has been the leadoff hitter. Curtis Kowalski, hitting at the No. 3 spot, has also done well just ahead of clean-up hitter Panunzio.

"The No. 2 spot on the team is flipped between several people," said Kowalski.

Mike Manni, the team?s regular catcher, has also been productive at the plate, along with Boxford resident Edison Thayer. A home school student, Thayer has seen most of his time at designated hitter or first base.

John Kowalski?s son Braden manages the Middleton Junior Legion team, a squad made up almost entirely of 15-year-olds and playing against mostly 16-and 17-year-olds.

"They?re improving. They?ve been ?in? almost every game, though unfortunately their record hasn?t been great at 4-11-1," said John. "The goal this year was not to win, but to see improvement from the beginning of the season. We?re definitely seeing much stronger baseball skills and overall knowledge."

In the Junior Legion league, every team makes the playoffs, and the Junior squad will take to the field on Wednesday.

Morocco World News received a clarification statement from the ISESCO media department in response to the article published last Friday about the dismissal of the Moroccan researcher Ms. FA.C. The ISESCO pinpoints that ?the plaintiff has received ? a contract termination notice, but not an expulsion, that she has received personally and signed in her office.

The ISESCO statement makes it clear that ?The fact that the person concerned filed, without advance notice and while on duty, a lawsuit claiming deprivation of those rights she was initially entitled to under her employment contract, which had not yet come to expiry was faulted by ISESCO General Directorate as a serious mistake, a violation of hierarchy, and an act of non-compliance not only with work regulations but also with the contract itself.?

In other words the ISESCO considers that the termination of the contract was a reaction to the reception of the ?status settlement warning letter? that the general directorate had received on July 17th.

In regard to Ms FA.C insistence on the right to be affiliated to the National Fund for Social Security ( CNSS) , the ISESCO retorts that? The person concerned takes out work risk insurance at ISESCO. She is also registered with the Medical Insurance Fund and the End-of-Service Fund (pension fund) for ISESCO personnel. Besides, the complainant benefits from a year-end bonus (additional month?s salary) and per diem (daily allowance) for assignment inside and outside the seat country (Morocco)?.

Though the ISESCO statement states explicitly that Ms FA.C has made a serious mistake by hiring a lawyer and filing a warning statement, it pinpoints in its statement that ?It does not object to the person concerned resorting to the courts, as it remains fully confident in the Moroccan judicature?s impartiality and understanding of the privileges and immunities accorded to the Organization.?

On the other hand, the ISESCO statement denies that ?The Kingdom of Morocco prevailed on ISESCO to register its personnel with Morocco?s Social Security Fund (CNSS)?, adding that ?The staff members of ISESCO benefit from a special insurance fund approved by the Organization?s deliberative bodies (Executive Council and General Conference) and endorsed by its 50 Member States, including the Kingdom of Morocco, the Seat Country?.

When confronted with the facts listed in the ISESCO clarification statement, Ms. FA.C stated that sources close to the ministry of foreign affairs and cooperation confirm that the ministry requests the ISESCO each year to send the list of the names of their staff affiliated to the National Fund for Social Security, as well as their affiliation number.

The case is now in the hands of the judiciary that will weight up the evidence set forth by both sides. Nevertheless, the incident raises questions about the status of Moroccan employees working under international organizations.

The ambivalence of their status increases the likelihood of disputes with their employers, as well as the abuse of their rights.

Nevertheless, it must be clear that no institution or person is above the law regardless of their status. More transparency in the management of international organizations operating in Morocco is highly needed in order to consolidate the concept of accountability enshrined in the new constitution and advocated ardently by Benkirane?s government.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? Jimmie Johnson stamped another exclamation point on his racing resume, winning his fourth career Brickyard 400 with a dominant drive at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday.

With the victory, Johnson joined Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jeff Gordon as the only NASCAR drivers to win four times at the historic 2.5-mile track, which has hosted stock car racing since 1994.

"Four wins? I'm at a loss for words," Johnson said in victory lane.

Kyle Busch finished second, followed by Greg Biffle, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Gordon. Polesitter Denny Hamlin was sixth.

It was a rough day for Matt Kenseth, who came into Sunday's race with the Sprint Cup Series points lead but was taken out of the race in a late collision with Joey Logano.

Johnson also won the Brickyard in 2006, 2008 and 2009.

"They're that good, and they deserve it," Gordon said

The victory puts Johnson among some legendary names in the historic track's record books. Gordon is the only other four-time Brickyard 400 winner. Only three drivers have won four Indianapolis 500s: A.J. Foyt, Al Unser Sr. and Rick Mears; Mears was one of Johnson's racing heroes growing up.

Formula One ace Michael Schumacher won the U.S. Grand Prix five times on Indy's road course configuration.

But Johnson's big moment was seen by another disappointing crowd at what still is considered one of the Sprint Cup Series' most prestigious races.

After drawing huge crowds for more than a decade after the first NASCAR race at Indianapolis in 1994, attendance has been sagging in recent years. The front-stretch stands were fairly full but there were sparse crowds in the turns.

Jeff Burton's flat tire brought out a caution with 36 laps to go, giving the leaders an opportunity to make their final pit stops.

Johnson, Brad Keselowski, Gordon and Busch all took four tires on their stops ? but Biffle only took two tires, allowing him to come out of the pits first.

The race restarted with 31 laps to go, with Biffle taking the lead and Johnson fighting off Busch to hold on to second.

Biffle's lead didn't last long, as Johnson went around him on the front stretch with 29 laps to go.

Joey Logano then spun and collected Kenseth, leaving his car banged-up and smoldering. Kenseth was OK ? but his points lead was gone.

"Everybody was just running everybody in the back, and you could see it was just a matter of time before the wreck happened," Kenseth said.

Johnson got a flawless restart when the race went back to green with 20 laps to go, then pulled away from Busch in the closing laps of the race.

Keselowski was going for a weekend sweep after winning the Nationwide Series race at Indianapolis on Saturday. And for a while, it looked like he might pull it off.

Keselowski and the No. 2 team experimented with a different pit stop strategy than the rest of the leaders, attempting to set up the possibility of stretching their fuel mileage at the end of the race.

Keselowski pitted on lap 91, while the rest of the leaders pitted under caution four laps later.

But Keselowski's car got loose after the race restarted on lap 101, and he slid back to seventh ? a significant setback, given how hard it is to pass at Indianapolis.

It was a rough day for Carl Edwards, whose engine began losing power only a handful of laps into the race.

In his first race with new crew chief Chad Norris, Edwards qualified second and went into Sunday hopeful that it was a good omen for turning around what has been a fairly disappointing season.

Edwards was running third in the early stages of the race, but began dropping in the field after mechanical problems hit. He had to make a lengthy pit stop, losing two laps to the leaders.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? Ask Americans how race relations have changed under their first black president and they are ready with answers.

Ashley Ray, a white woman, hears more people debating racial issues. "I know a lot of people who really thought we were OK as a nation, a culture, and now they understand that we're not," she says.

Karl Douglass, a black man, sees stereotypes easing. "White people deal with me and my family differently," he says.

Jose Lozano, who is Hispanic by way of Puerto Rico, believes prejudice is emerging from the shadows. "Now the racism is coming out," he says.

In the afterglow of Barack Obama's historic victory, most people in the United States believed that race relations would improve. Nearly four years later, has that dream come true? Americans have no shortage of thoughtful opinions, and no consensus.

As the nation moves toward the multiracial future heralded by this son of an African father and white mother, the events of Obama's first term, and what people make of them, help trace the racial arc of his presidency.

Shortly before the 2008 election, 56 percent of Americans surveyed by the Gallup organization said that race relations would improve if Obama were elected. One day after his victory, 70 percent said race relations would improve and only 10 percent predicted they would get worse.

Just weeks after taking office, Obama said, "There was justifiable pride on the part of the country that we had taken a step to move us beyond some of the searing legacies of racial discrimination."

Then he joked, "But that lasted about a day."

Or, rather, three months.

By July 2009, the black Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates was arrested for yelling at a white police officer who questioned whether Gates had broken into his own home. Asked to comment, Obama said he didn't know all the facts, but Gates was a personal friend and the officer had acted "stupidly."

The uproar was immediate. Obama acknowledged afterward, "I could've calibrated those words differently."

Ed Cattaneo, a retired computer training manager from Cape May, N.J., points to that episode as evidence of how Obama has hurt race relations.

"He's made them terrible," says Cattaneo, who is white. He also sees Obama as siding against white people through actions such as his Justice Department's decision to drop voter intimidation charges against New Black Panthers and in a program to turn out the black vote called "African-Americans for Obama."

Larry Sharkey, also white, draws different conclusions from the past four years.

"Attitudes are much better," Sharkey says as he slices raw meat in a Philadelphia butcher shop. He remembers welcoming a black family that moved next door to him 20 years ago in Claymont, Del. A white neighbor advised him not to associate with the new arrivals, warning, "Your property values are going to go down."

That kind of thing would never happen today, Sharkey says.

As Obama dealt with fallout from the Gates affair during the summer of 2009, the tea party coalesced out of opposition to Obama's stimulus and health care proposals. The vast majority of tea partyers were white. A small number of them displayed racist signs or were connected to white supremacist groups, prompting the question: Are Obama's opponents motivated by dislike of the president's policies, his race ? or both?

As that debate grew, Obama retreated to the race-neutral stance that has been a hallmark of his career. An October 2009 Gallup poll showed a large drop in racial optimism since the election, with 41 percent of respondents saying that race relations had improved under Obama. Thirty-five percent said there was no change and 22 percent said race relations were worse.

The president has discussed race in occasional speeches to groups such as the National Urban League or the National Council of La Raza, and in interviews with Hispanic and African-American media outlets. But he usually walks a careful line, allowing the nation to get used to the idea of a black president without doing things to make race seem a central aspect of his governance.

"There is a totally different psychological frame of reference that this country has never had," says William Smith, executive director of the National Center for Race Amity at Wheelock College.

He cites evidence of progress from the mindset of children in his programs to new history curriculums in Deep South schools.

"To me, that's a quantum leap," Smith says.

Douglass, a real estate agent from Columbus, Ga., says white people seem less surprised to see him with his wife and daughter in places such as an art museum or a foreign language school.

"I think white people deal with me and my family differently since an African-American man is leader of the free world and a nuclear black family lives in the White House," he says.

But Steven Chen, an Asian-American graduate student in Philadelphia, points to racial rhetoric he has heard directed toward Obama, in person and online, as proof that race relations have deteriorated.

He also has observed a more visible sign of division: fewer Obama T-shirts.

"When he was elected, it was an American thing. People of all races wore them," says Chen. "Today it's a distinctly black phenomenon."

Ray, a graduate school administrator from Chicago, is uncertain whether race relations have remained the same or gotten worse.

It's good that people are talking about race more, she says, "but I know quite a few people who are sick of those discussions and blame him for all of it."

In the summer of 2010, race and politics collided again when Arizona Republicans passed an immigration law that critics said would lead to racial profiling of Hispanics.

Lozano, the police sergeant, remembers that when Obama visited Arizona and met with the governor, who supported the law, she wagged an angry finger in the president's face.

"That was ugly, I've never seen anything like that," says Lozano, who also is vice president of the Massachusetts Association of Minority Law Enforcement Officers. "There's no way that would have ever happened to a white president."

By the fall of 2010, Republicans had triumphed in the midterm elections and made history by electing Hispanic and Indian-American governors in New Mexico, South Carolina, and Nevada. Two black Republicans also went to Congress, from South Carolina and Florida.

Less than a year later, an August 2011 Gallup poll showed a further decline in racial optimism: 35 percent said race relations had improved due to Obama's election, 41 percent said no change, and 23 percent said things were worse.

Around this time, some African-American lawmakers and pundits openly complained about the president's refusal to specifically target any programs at high black unemployment. An interviewer from Black Entertainment Television asked Obama why not.

"That's not how America works," Obama replied.

Recently they took up entirely different roles in each others' lives -- as Aykroyd officiated at the wedding of Chase's daughter, according to a post Aykroyd put up on his Facebook account?Thursday.?

"It was an honor, privilege and great responsibility to have officiated as the spiritual minister at Chevy Chase's daughter's wedding," he wrote. "The bride and groom are delightful and beautiful young people who will help define together a more positive and loving future for themselves, family, friends and the world."

New York Magazine's Vulture column?speculates that the daughter is Chevy's eldest, Cydney Chase, and that the gray-haired man with the bald spot in the front row (see the photo) is likely the father of the bride.
