JOPLIN, Mo. ? Pies of all flavors and varieties are being baked through Saturday as a church fundraiser and to generate donations for tornado recovery in Moore, Okla.
The project is the 20th annual Independence Day pie sale at Byers Avenue United Methodist Church in Joplin. Normally a three-day event, the sale is being extended an additional day to raise funds for relief efforts in Oklahoma. Two years ago, the volunteer bakers at the church added another day to their schedule to raise money for Joplin-area tornado victims.
The church project sells hundreds of pies each year. A record was set last year when more than 1,200 pies were sold, according to Debbie Beck, who heads up the effort.
?Everything is homemade, from the crust to the fillings, and some of the recipes have been in our families for years,? she said. ?Our newest pie is peanut butter, which is like a peanut butter cup, with chocolate ganache in the bottom, a peanut butter filling, and swirls of ganache and peanuts on top.?
Other pies for sale are cherry, apple, pecan and pumpkin; meringue pies in coconut, chocolate, banana and lemon; and creme pies in chocolate and French silk. Sugar-free pies are available in apple, chocolate, lemon and coconut. In addition to fresh-baked pies, apple and cherry pies also are sold frozen, with baking instructions included.
The cost is $11 for 10-inch pies and $6 for mini-pies.
Orders must be placed in advance by calling the church at 624-3647 or by ordering online at byersaveumc.org.
