Haiti's plans to rebuild army meets opposition (AP)

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti ? A plan by Haiti President Michel Martelly to restore the country's disbanded military is running into opposition.

A lawmaker from Haiti's dominant political party says the country needs to develop its national police force instead of revive an army disbanded in 1995.

Moise Jean-Charles of the Unity party said Wednesday that the government cannot afford an army. He says it would require funding from foreign partners and is worried they would exert excessive influence over it.

His party has an absolute majority in the Senate and controls much of the lower Chamber of Deputies.

The Associated Press learned on Tuesday that Martelly wants to revive the army to patrol borders, provide stability and crack down on criminals.
